Where the sector stands today.
Generative AI arrived in classrooms before most institutions had a policy for it. Students already use it to draft, revise and study; teachers are divided on whether that is learning or a shortcut; and assessment methods built around the take-home essay are under strain. Behind the teaching question sit others. Funding is tight, enrolment patterns are shifting, and employers want evidence of skills, not only certificates. Administrative teams carry heavy workloads in admissions, student support and compliance. EdTech companies, for their part, face buyers who have grown sceptical after a wave of tools that promised much and were quietly abandoned. Leaders are deciding how to redesign assessment, where AI tutoring and support genuinely help learners, how to protect student data and academic integrity, and which administrative work can be handed to machines so staff spend more time with students.
Education runs on the professional judgement of teachers and academics, so we do not start with a tool. We start with faculty, student services and administrators, listening to what takes their time and what they worry AI will do to learning. With leadership we set out principles, decision rights and a governance approach that academic boards can stand behind. Then we improve the processes around admissions, support and records, organise institutional knowledge so it can be searched reliably, and pilot AI with willing departments before anything is mandated.
The institutions handling AI well did not begin by banning it or buying it. They began by asking each department what they want students to be able to do unaided, and what they are happy for students to do with help. That single conversation reshapes assessment, settles most integrity arguments, and tells you which tools are worth having. Policy written without it tends to be ignored by students and resented by staff.
